CU African dance students perform for community as their final

University of Colorado African dance students held a big, joyful, sweaty dance party Sunday, showing off their moves and inviting friends and family to join in.

Sunday’s community celebration was the first of three, with the remaining two set for this week. The celebrations serve as the final exam for the 45 or so students in CU instructor Nii Armah Sowah’s dance classes.

“African dance is physical, but it’s also emotional and spiritual,” Sowah said. “You are dancing with a village because the village belongs to you and you belong to the village.”

The CU students danced to live drumming, showing the audience a Ghanaian dance before inviting people in the crowd to join them at the end. Next, they demonstrated choreographed dances that they created for the class.
