Coaching through Calamity

In an orientation last week between football head coach Willie Taggart and his staff, athletic director Stan Wilcox made it simple: Florida State wants Taggart to become the first African-American head coach to win a national championship with a Division 1 school.

“It was probably the first time Willie had it from me and his staff,” Wilcox said. “I said to them ‘I’m about making history, and I believe that most of you are all about making history too.’ With the right support in Willie, we can win a national championship.”

Wilcox likened this to when John Thompson won the college basketball title in 1984 with Georgetown and how subsequently doors began to open for black coaches.
