Carl Snowden: Area has had many women pathbreakers

Women’s History Month is being celebrated throughout the nation. I and my mom, who is 102 years old, have both been eyewitnesses to history.

Prior to 1920, women were denied the right to vote. Contrast that to today. As of last month a record number of women had filed for elective offices in Anne Arundel County. Women are seeking a host of elective offices, including those of judge, state senator, delegate, county councilman and sheriff — the last of which has never been held by a woman.

Twenty years ago, I was part of the effort to elect Janet S. Owens as our first female county executive. I will never forget that race. Mrs. Owens defied the odds and won against a well-financed Republican incumbent. Her election was a watershed moment in our history.
