He said the hashtag campaign was designed to rebuff “broad-brushing” of a whole community based on the actions of a few and instead to tell positive stories about Victoria’s African community and profile its lawyers, doctors, accountants, engineers and other professionals.

“It was a hasthag created at time of a media frenzy of sensationalist reporting of so-called African gangs in Victoria, when [Home Affairs Minister] Peter Dutton commented that people in Victoria were afraid to go out to restaurants and then the Prime Minister added to that statement,” Mr Mayek said.
