Call Box: His camera captured African-American life – News – The Florida Times-Union


Dear Call Box: Is there an archive of pictures of African-American schoolchildren from Darnell-Cookman Elementary School from 1957 to 1960? I think the pictures may have been taken by photographer E.L. Weems, who moved to Atlanta and has since passed away. I am unable to locate anyone who has his collections from that era. I have tried the Duval County School Board, but I was told they no longer have those records.

Dear R.L.: Ellie Lee Weems was a prominent African-American commercial photographer who was born in 1901 and came to Jacksonville in 1928. He opened his first studio at Broad and Duval streets before relocating to Bay Street. For many years, his home and studio were opposite old Stanton High School at 434 W.
