Winners advance to regional competition in Foxboro.

BROCKTON — Maya Brown’s story of a fierce 17th-century Angolan queen and Wilson Fernandes Soares Rosa’s tale of America’s first serial killer at Chicago’s World Fair were among the winners of this year’s National History Day Competition at Brockton High School.

The winners will advance to the South Shore regional competition in March, and could further advance to the state competition later this year.

Brown’s eye-catching display, which turned her tri-fold poster into a veritable castle, told the story of Queen Anna Nzinga of Angola, who fended off Portuguese invaders in a time when women were rarely perceived as leaders.
