Barack Obama’s Summer Reading List of (Mostly) African Authors


Barack Obama just shared his summer reading list, and it has a theme: Obama will be traveling to Africa for the first time since he left office, and his reading list is, accordingly, full of African authors. On July 17, Obama will deliver the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg to mark the 100th anniversary of Mandela’s birth, and, according to his former speechwriter Ben Rhodes, it will be his most important post-presidency speech yet. The political landscape has shifted (some might say imploded) since his remarks at Mandela’s memorial in 2013, and in the midst of Donald Trump’s tumultuous trip to the U.K., negotiations with North Korea, and an immigration crackdown at home, the world needs a bright spot of hope.
