Who or what is Jim Crow and what does he or it have to do with US tennis champion Serena Williams?

Such is one of the questions arising from the global social medial controversy about Mark Knight’s cartoon published in Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper following Williams’ actions in the US Open final against Japan’s Naomi Osaka.

There has been a storm of reaction suggesting Knight’s portrayal of Williams echoes the racist history of cartoons of African-Americans, specifically the “dehumanising Jim Crow caricatures common in the 19th and 20th centuries”.

Knight has rejected the criticism as nonsense, saying he was commenting on Williams’ behaviour during the match.
