Artist showcases self-portrait paintings created over nearly two


CARBONDALE — Artist DeSande R is using her art as a tool to inspire others in the community.

DeSande R is showcasing a solo exhibition at the African American Museum of Southern Illinois called “A Representation of the External Form: Decade and a Half Retrospective.” The self-portrait section of the exhibit includes 13 different self-portraits.

“I guess it represents self-identity, how we see ourselves, in different frames, different lights, different situations,” DeSande R said.

Each oil painting took her about one month to complete over a period of almost two decades. DeSande R did her first painting in high school.

“I taught myself how to use the oil paints because the teacher we had was actually a music teacher teaching art,” DeSande R said.
