Airline statement after Birmingham Airport to Caribbean flight forced into dramatic u-turn

An airline has issued a statement after a flight from Birmingham Airport made an unscheduled u-turn.

The flight, departing from the Midlands air travel hub to the Caribbean, left Birmingham Airport shortly after 12.30pm on Tuesday.

It was initially scheduled to land in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

The flight was set to touch down in the Caribbean nine hours later – but turned around and headed back to Brum.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner barely passed over the north-western tip of Ireland before making the u-turn, reports CoventryLive.

It has now been confirmed that there was “a technical issue with the aircraft”, leading to the diversion.

Passengers were eventually able to travel to Punta Cana around three hours later, when the flight diverted again.
