African FAs silent on Trump’s call for support

African football federations are playing their cards close to the vest about who they will back to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in reaction to US president Donald Trump’s request that Africa supports the American bid.

Trump, during a meeting with Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari earlier this week, called on African nations to support his country’s joint bid with Mexico and Canada.

“I hope all African countries and countries throughout the world that we also will be supporting you, and that they will likewise support us in our bid along with Canada and Mexico for the 2026 World Cup,” Trump said.

“We will be watching very closely, and any help they could give us in that bid we would appreciate.”
