African children’s choir to perform at Celebrate Wallingford


WALLINGFORD — A children’s choir from Uganda is slated to perform at Celebrate Wallingford, telling their stories through music and dance.

Destiny Africa formed in 2008 at the Kampala Children’s Centre, a rescue home for children who were abandoned, orphaned or in vulnerable situations after civil war displaced more than 1.5 million people.

The show is scheduled for 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday on the main stage.

Torrie Long, the United States liaison for the Kampala Children’s Centre and choir tour manager, lives in Wallingford.

She said choir members have put stories about their lives at the center into song.

“Kids were finding more healing and transition through the music they created than any other counseling,” Long said.
