African and global migration goals need to align better

Migration has moved to the top of the global agenda this year. The African Union’s (AU) decision at its January summit on an open-border policy to facilitate smoother, safer migration of the continent’s people made this clear. Changes are also happening globally – but is everyone pulling in the same direction?

A review of the draft Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (the Global Compact) and the AU’s Common African Position on this compact shows several significant differences in approach and priorities. The Global Compact was released on 5 February by the United Nations missions of Mexico and Switzerland, and the AU unveiled the Common African Position in January.
