Leroy Robert “Satchel” Paige was an American Negro league baseball and Major League Baseball pitcher who is notable for being perhaps the best pitcher in baseball history.
The Negro Leagues, which began in 1920, were established during the period in the United States when professional baseball was segregated. Comprised predominantly of African Americans, they included several leagues across the country, including the Negro American League and the Negro National League.

The Boston Colored Giants, also known as the Royal Giants, served as a farm team for the Negro American League in the 1930s and ‘40s and competed against mill or industrial teams from Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.
