African American Heritage Society of Long Beach gets back to business of keeping history alive – Press Telegram

A year ago, Nicole Ballard stumbled upon a significant but not widely known source of information: the African American Resource Center at the Burnett Library.

A Long Beach mother of three boys ages 13,10 and 4, Ballard was helping her sons work on a project for Black History Month and was looking for libraries when she came across the center.

“The more I kept digging, the more I kept finding,” she said.

That led to her joining the African American Heritage Society of Long Beach, the 21-year-old organization led by the late Indira Hale-Tucker that financed and supported the resource center – a compilation of books, videos and magazines about black history, culture and achievement and contains more than 1,500 items and special…
