11th annual African American Read-In hosted by Central Florida | Local News

ABOVE: Children from Seven Rivers Christian School participate in the 11th annual African American Read-In. The children read poems from the book “Poems for the People: A Collection, written by Mildred D. Johnson.” Other readings included “The Eagle Who Thought He Was A Chicken” by Vikram Karve and “The Madman of Piney Woods” by Christopher Paul Curtis. The African American Read-In was established in 1990 and is built on the premise that “a school and community reading event can be an effective way to promote diversity in children’s literature, encourage young people to read, and shine a spotlight on African American authors” (National Council of Teachers of English, November 2014).
