Hundreds sick on Royal Caribbean cruise

NBC, (WILX) – A nightmare cruise is going from bad to worse as hundreds of passengers are now sick in their rooms at sea.

The Oasis of the Seas, one of the largest cruise ships in the world, is headed back to a Florida port a day early.

In all, more than 400 Of the 8,400 passenger on board have been quarantined, confined to their cabins, likely with norovirus which causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Crew members who are not ill are scrambling to sanitize the ship.

A cruise ship will return to its Florida port one day early, after hundreds of its guests and crew were struck by the bug norovirus.

Passengers on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, at one point the largest cruise ship in the world, were reportedly not allowed to disembark when it reached Falmouth, Jamaica on a scheduled seven-day cruise.

Officials decided to return to Florida on Saturday, instead of Sunday, saying passengers would be given full refunds. “We think the right thing to do is get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health”, a spokesman told the Associated Press.

Norovirus is a highly contagious disease, the symptoms of which include vomiting and diarrhoea.

277 Royal Caribbean cruise passengers sick with norovirus, trip ending early

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas will be heading home to Florida one day early, as the number of passengers and crew sick with norovirus has risen to at least 277.

On Jan. 10, WESH reported that the ocean liner will be returning to Port Canaveral on Jan. 12, soon after Royal Caribbean reps confirmed to the Associated Press that 277 passengers had fallen sick with the gastrointestinal bug.


The $1.5 billion, award-winning Oasis of the Seas weighs 226,000 tons, is 1,184 feet long and can carry a maximum of 8,880 people, as per the ship’s official web page.

Nearly 500 now sick after norovirus outbreak on Royal Caribbean cruise ship: report

Nearly 500 people have now fallen ill after a norovirus outbreak on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship this week, almost double the amount originally reported, The Orlando Sentinel reports.

The report says Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas on Thursday (Jan. 10) cut its week-long cruise short and started to return to its home port at Port Canaveral, Florida, after 277 people were showing symptoms of norovirus, which include vomiting and diarrhea. The 6,285-passenger cruise ship is expected to return to Florida on Saturday.

The number of people hit with a gastrointestinal illness on a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship has swelled to nearly 500, a company spokeswoman said Friday.

The increase to 475 people comes a day after the company said 277 passengers on the Oasis of the Seas had initially fallen ill.

Travelers on the cruise ship — which according to Royal Caribbean’s website is a 1,187-foot long vessel and was voted the best cruise ship 2014 by Travel Weekly readers — started feeling sick after the ship departed from Port Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida, on Sunday.
