China reports African swine fever outbreak in Ningxia region


BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s agriculture ministry on Sunday reported a new African swine fever outbreak in the northwestern region of Ningxia.

The outbreak occurred on a farm with 57 live pigs in Yongning county, infecting pigs and killing 13, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said in a statement.

Caribbean advised to prepare for dengue outbreak




While the last dengue outbreak in the Caribbean region occurred 10 years ago, The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) says disease modelling predicts that another regional outbreak of dengue may occur in the near future, prompting officials to advise countries to implement enhanced measures to reduce mosquito breeding and prevent the spread of disease.

In 2018, Latin America showed an increase in the number of dengue cases. More recently, the outbreak of dengue in Jamaica has elevated the level of concern in other Caribbean islands.

Most recently, the region experienced outbreak of other mosquito-borne viruses–Chikungunya in 2014 and Zika in 2016.

Since then, the region has experienced two large outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases, chikungunya in 2014 and zika in 2016, which are unlikely to reoccur soon. Disease modelling, however, predicts that another regional outbreak of dengue may occur in the near future.

The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) has called on health officials across the region to prepare for the possibility of a severe outbreak of the mosquito borne Dengue Fever.

In a statement Thursday, CARPHA said the last major regional outbreak of Dengue occurred in 2009. 

“Since then, the Region has experienced two large outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases, Chikungunya in 2014 and Zika in 2016, which are unlikely to reoccur soon.”

The regional agency also said that “Disease modeling  predicts that another regional outbreak of Dengue may occur in the near future,” adding that last year,   Latin America showed an increase in the number of Dengue cases.

Guyana, other Caribbean countries put on alert for dengue outbreak – Demerara Waves


Guyana and other Caribbean countries were Thursday urged to push back against a possible major outbreak of dengue across the region in view of disease forecasts and a recent upsurge of the mosquito-borne illness.

“Disease modelling, however, predicts that another regional outbreak of Dengue may occur in the near future,” the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) said in a statement.
