Nearly 300 people come down with stomach illness on Royal Caribbean cruise

A Royal Caribbean cruise ended early after nearly 300 people reportedly suffered gastrointestinal symptoms.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that 277 guests and crew members came down with a symptoms consistent with norovirus, a stomach illness that can be caused by contaminated food or drinks, or by people not washing their hands, according to the CDC.

The cruise line stressed that sick passengers accounted for a small percentage of the nearly 9,000 people aboard the Oasis of the Seas cruise.

Nevertheless, authorities in Jamaica didn’t allow any of the guests to disembark as a precaution. Some passengers complained on social media that many parts of the boat had been cordoned off. They said that most restaurants and bars were closed during the long wait at the Jamaican port.

Royal Caribbean ship ending cruise early after illness outbreak

Jan. 10 (UPI) — The Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas is headed back to its home port one day earlier in Florida because of gastrointestinal illness onboard, the cruise line said Thursday.

The ship, which holds more than 6,000 passengers and 2,000 crew members, is returning to Port Canaveral in Central Florida on Saturday because of the sickness of 277 people, Royal Caribbean spokesman Owen Torres told the Orlando Sentinel.

“We think the right thing to do is to get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health,” Royal Caribbean said in the statement. “Returning on Saturday also gives us more time to completely clean and sanitize the ship before her next sailing.”

Brooklyn group: Guyanese prez illness exploited

The Brooklyn-based Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) claims that Guyana’s Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo, is seeking to exploit the current illness of President David Granger.

Granger has been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment in Cuba.

Jagdeo, a former president, has filed a no confidence motion against the Granger-led coalition government, which was elected in 2015 with a one-seat majority in Parliament. The government has 33 seats in Parliament, while Jagdeo’s opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has 32.
